About The Backyard Birder

The Backyard Birder is an independent online guide that helps people enjoy the birds in their own backyards. We publish clear, practical articles about bird watching, feeding, identification, and care.

What we write about

• Getting started — gear, binoculars, and bird identification.
• Attracting birds — feeders, food, baths, and birdhouses.
• Common birds — cardinals, blue jays, hummingbirds, and more.
• Bird behavior — migration, songs, nesting, and winter survival.
• Seasonal & care — what to watch for each season, and keeping feeders clean.

Who this site is for

We write for beginners who are just noticing the birds outside their window and for backyard enthusiasts looking for reliable, practical advice. Every guide assumes no prior knowledge and explains each topic in plain language.

How we approach our guides

Every article is written to be useful in a real backyard, with three principles in mind: practical methods with ordinary supplies, honest advice about what matters and what doesn't, and a focus on caring for birds responsibly.
